DENVER – The Class 2A State Tournament began Thursday at the Blue FCU Arena in Loveland. Individual statistics were unavailable for the games.
Sanford girls 51, Hoehne 37
The second-ranked Sanford High School girls basketball team advanced to the Class 2A semifinals with a 51-37 win over seventh-ranked Hoehne.
The Lady Mustangs led 11-8 after the first quarter, 26-18 at halftime and 44-28 after the third quarter.
Sanford (24-2) played Sedgwick County, a 37-33 winner over Simla on Friday. If the Lady Mustangs won, they would play either Merino or Akron in the finals Saturday at 5 p.m. A loss will send them to the third-place game at 2 p.m.
Simla 56, Sanford boys 46
The eighth-ranked Sanford boys team’s hopes of winning a state title was dashed as it lost to top-ranked Simla 56-46 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The Cubs led 15-4 after the first quarter and 31-14 at halftime. The Mustangs pulled within 45-32 after the third quarter and they outscored Simla 14-13 in the fourth quarter.
Byers 56, Sanford boys 50
The season ended for the Sanford boys team on Friday as it was defeated by Byers 56-50 on Friday.
The Bulldogs led 13-6 after the first quarter, 29-12 at halftime, and 44-28 after three quarters. The Mustangs attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter by outscoring Byers 22-12. However, the comeback fell six points short.
Sanford’s final record was 20 wins and seven losses.
Merino 49, Sargent girls 20
The eighth-ranked Sargent High School girls basketball team began the tournament with a 49-20 loss to top-ranked Merino.
The Lady Rams led 14-7 after the first quarter, 31-11 at halftime and 43-14 after the third quarter.
Burlington 50, Sargent girls 33
The season came to an end for the Sargent girls team as it was defeated by Burlington 50-33 on Friday.
The Lady Cougars led 19-9 after the first quarter, 27-14 at halftime, and 39-29 after the third quarter.
Sargent finishes the season with 20 wins and seven losses.
