Bulls have upper hand at Stampede

MONTE VISTA – Colorado’s oldest pro rodeo, the Ski-Hi Stampede, had its 104th edition this past weekend at Ski-Hi Park’s Charlie Burd Arena.

In bull riding, the bulls had the advantage. Of the 20 bull riders who entered, only four were able to complete a qualified ride. All of the successful rides came on Sunday.

The bull riding champion was Hudson Bolton of Milan, Tenn. He scored 87 points on Redneck in the next to last ride of the rodeo.

Others with qualified rides were Baulio Betance of Douglas, Ariz., who scored 85 points on Gold Nugget, 86, Cade Griego of Stanley, N.M., who scored 82 on Tea Train, 82, and Jace Trosclair of Chauvin, La., who scored 81 on Shazam.

There was also a permit bull riding section with five riders. Competing. Of that total, only one was successful as Morgan Merrill of Weatherford, Texas, scored 76 points on Tex on Sunday.

The riders were more successful on the other two rough stock events.

In bareback riding, Clay Jorgenson, Watford, City., N.D., had the best score as he scored 87 points on Dreamliner, 87 on Saturday.

Also going to the pay window in bareback riding were Bodee Lammers of Tolar, Texas, who scored 83 ½ on Powder Burn on Friday, Gauge McBride of Kearney, Neb., who scored 81 ½ on Clairvoyant of Friday, Darien Johnson of Tremonton, Utah, who scored 81 on Jesse’s Girl on Sunday, Logan Patterson of Kim who scored 80 on Betty’s Boy on Sunday, and Wyatt Williams of San Angelo, Texas who scored 80 on Flashcard Champ on Sunday.

The Saddle Bronc competition was won by Devon Hay of Kaycee, Wyo., who scored 85 ½ points on Chester on Sunday.

Other top performances were recorded by Michael Johnston of Weatherford, Texas, who scored 85 points on Intruder on Friday, Cauy Pennington of Kiowa with 85 on Gun Point on Friday, Will Pollock of Utopia, Texas with 84 on Sally Rand on Saturday, Gavin Nelson of Wibaux, Mont., with 83 1.2 on Blew Apart on Sunday, Mitchie Story of Bayfield with 83 on Tom Horn on Sunday, Traven Sharon of Ordway with 83 on Oopsy on Sunday, and Jasper Frost of Browns Valley, Calif., with 83 on Levi the Boss on Sunday.

Pace Garrett of Gillette, Wyo., won the permit saddle bronc riding with 80 points on Wild Ways on Saturday. Colby Smith of Burns, Wyo., was second with 79 ½ on Northern Lights on Sunday, Mitchie Story of Bayfield with 79 ½ on Northern Lights, 79 on Sunday, Parker Matthews of Miami, Okla., with 74 on Ghost Rider, 74 on Saturday, Porter McCumber of Thermopolis, Wyo., with 74 on Big Drift 74 on Saturday, and Traven Sharon of Ordway with 70 in Buck Ya on Sunday.

In other events, David Gallagher of Brighton won steer wrestling in 4.3 seconds on Sunday. Also placing high were Zane Cline of Yeso, N.M., in 4.8 on Saturday, Jacob Wang, Laramie, Wyo., in 5.4 on Sunday, Chisum Docheff of Mead in 6.4, on Saturday, Cameron Haumea of Yeso, N.M. in 6.9 on Saturday, and Sam Gallagher of Brighton in 7.6 on Sunday.

Dean Holyan of Coyote Canypn, N.M., won tie-down roping with an even 10-second run on Sunday. Other top performances were recorded by Cade Wallis of Lubbock, Texas, in 11.2 on Friday, R.J. Straw, Lenapah, Okla., in 12.1 on Sunday, Matt Peters of Hot Springs, S.D., in 12.3 on Sunday, Stetson Jameson of Happy, Texas, in 12.5 on Friday, and Darnell Johnson of Fowler in 12.5 on Sunday.

There was a tie for the top spot in team roping. Ky Redstrom of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Reece Wadhams of Phoenix, Ariz., had a 4.7 run in the Saturday morning slack, and Kellan Johnson of Casper, Wyo., and Trae Smith of Georgetown, Idaho, had the same time in the Saturday evening performance.

Also going to the pay window were Riley Kittle of Woodland, Ala., and Trey Yates of Pueblo with 5.3  in the slack, Bodie Mattson of Sturgis, S.D., and Arye Espenscheid of Big Piney, Wyo. in 5.3 on Saturday evening, Johnny Salvo of Horse Springs, N.M., and John Hisel of Elida, N.M., in  5.4 in the slack, and J.C. Archuleta and Brandon Baca, both of Las Vegas, N.M., in 5.5  on Saturday.

In women’s events, Shay Clements of Wolfforth, Texas, won breakaway roping in 2.2 seconds on Sunday. Jakelyn Primrose of Eaglelake, Texas, tied for second in 2.3 seconds in the slack, along with Erin Johnson of Fowler on Sunday. Samantha Kingsbury of Deleon, Texas, had a 2.4-second run in the slack, Lyndsey Orris, of Bosque, N.M., had 2.7 seconds in the slack, and Bailey Coates of Levelland, Texas, had 2.8 on Friday.

Brittany Tonozzi of Lampasas, Texas, won barrel racing in 17.28 on Saturday. She was followed by Wendy Reed of Roopville, Ga., in 17.54 on Sunday, Alyssa Urbanek-Wade of Stephenville, Texas in 17.56 on Friday, Alex Odle of Brush in 17.75 on Saturday, Makiah Flake of Millsap, Texas, in 17.76 in the slack, and Bonnie Wheatley of Kremmling in 17.81 on Sunday.

Mattson was the all-around cowboy.

Local rodeo

The local rodeo took place Saturday afternoon following the slack.

There were three events in the local rodeo – barrel raving, team roping and tiedown roping. The Top 8 finishers returned to compete in the main rodeo on Saturday evening and on Sunday.

There were 13 barrel racers with Kollyns McCullough, Taylor Valdez, Hallie Henry, Taycee DeHerrera, Raelyn Bouet, Lyla Gesink, Gracie Wilson, and Haylee Bond advancing. Wilson won the final in 18.21 seconds on Sunday, followed by Gesink in 18.49 also on Sunday, and DeHerrera in 18.50 on Saturday.

In team roping total of 24 teams were entered. Advancing were Miles Caldon and James Paine, Colby Crowther and Fernando Gonzales, Kelton Gartrell and Kalob Lepp, Tylee DeHerrera and Tim Deherrera, Caden Allen and Jeb Stolzfus, Trent Koenig and Grant Koenig, Ryan Canty and Travis Canty, and Bayley Bishop and Taten Koenig.

Bishop and Taten Koenig won in 7.2 seconds on Sunday, followed by Ryan and Travis Canty in 9.1 on Sunday, and Trent and Grant Koenig in 15.5 also on Sunday.

There were nine tie-down ropers entered. Tyler Huffaker, Travis Canty, Kelton Gartrell, Trace Johnson, Trent Koenig, Jared Sinclair, Kaysen Johnson and Blake Denton advanced to the finals, with Sinclair winning in 11.3 on Sunday. Johnson was second in 12,8 on Sunday, and Denton was third in 15.5 also on Sunday.
