MONTE VISTA — As the crowd watched in silence, two small children led by their parents walked out into the Ski-Hi Stampede arena on Saturday night to be presented with belt buckles and cowboy hats, but it was their bravery and resilience that took center stage.
This year the Ski-Hi Stampede chose to support three local families who have stood against a tidal wave as they work to raise children struggling with cancer. These families have fought to keep faith against all odds and were honored to be the recipients of this year’s Golden Circle of Champions donations.
The entire San Luis Valley community gathered around these families and donated money, time and effort to show them that they are not in this battle alone. Though a belt buckle and a night at the rodeo does nothing to beat cancer, it’s the feeling of being seen, heard and helped that rallies the strength that these families will need as they fight this battle.
Organizers announced a partnership with the Golden Circle of Champions, a nonprofit organization established in 2016 dedicated to raising awareness and crucial funds for children battling life-threatening diagnoses.
The collaboration aims to address the hardships that accompany childhood cancer, focusing heavily on the severe financial burdens that compound the emotional and physical toll of fighting the disease. From covering immediate household bills to purchasing essential medications, the initiative works to ensure that local families receive critical assistance during their medical journeys. Organizers emphasize that the effort is designed to make the difference between defeat and success for those facing substantial medical crises.
The historic Ski-Hi Stampede event coordinators noted that the initiative transforms the event from a standard regional rodeo into a clear message of support, solidarity and care that only comes from a tight-knit community like the San Luis Valley.
The Golden Circle of Champions expands its reach nationwide by partnering directly with prominent rodeos, building a network that pairs modern cowboy camaraderie with structural fundraising. The organization focuses on honoring the resilience of young patients, treating them as "champions" while offering direct financial relief to their households.
As the children were presented with their gifts, the crowd cheered, rocking the entire stadium in support of the families and everyone who helped donate to their cause. A huge thanks goes out to everyone who made Saturday night a night these children will never forget.
