SARGENT SCHOOL – The third-ranked Sanford High School boys basketball team got off to a good start and rode that momentum to a 58-31 win over Sargent Saturday at the Farmers’ gym.
“We came out firing tonight,” said Sanford coach Brice Crowther.
Colter Canty gave the Mustangs the early lead, followed by Trason Gartrell hitting a short jumper. Colter Canty then made a 3-point basket, and later a layup for a 9-0 Sanford lead.
Kyler Jones split at the free throw line for the Farmers’ only point of the first quarter. Gartrell made two baskets, with Joshua Fairhurst and Jared McCarroll making one for a 17-1 Sanford lead at the end of the first quarter.
Ben Faucette made a three to begin the second quarter, and Gartrell followed with a layup. Cadyn Wright scored Sargent’s first basket of the game, but Cahl Larsen drove for a layup.
Corbin Castillo drained a trey, but Gartrell scored another layup. Castillo made two free throws, but Larsen scored in the paint and added a free throw.
Joshua Fairhurst and Jared McCarroll both split at the line, but River Hodgson hit a jumper. Joshua Fairhurst made a 3-pointer just before the second quarter expired and Sanford led 34-10 at halftime.
Wright and Jones began the third quarter with layups, but Gartrell and Ben Faucette answered for the Mustangs. Kenyon Knorr buried a three, however, J.D. Faucette split at the line, and Jared McCarroll made a jumper.
J.D. Faucette made a layup and Jared McCarroll two free throws. Castillo made a three and a free throw to help the Farmers cut the lead to 45-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Crowther mainly played his junior varsity in the fourth quarter and it scored 13 points. Colton Reynolds began the period with a 3-pointer, followed by a layup by Blake Miller. Kyler Jones made a three, but Tyson Jones made a trey for the Mustangs. Kyler Jones drove for a layup, but Jayden Fairhurst made a three.
Kyler Jones and Hodgson both scored two points, and Castillo three to wrap up the scoring.
Gartrell was Sanford’s top scorer with 12 points. Castillo led Sargent also with 12.
Sanford (14-1, 3-0) will host Monte Vista on Thursday.
“They’re having a great year,” Crowther said. “They’re super athletic. They have good shooters and we’ll have out hands full. That’s for sure.”
Sargent (5-7, 0-3) will travel to Fairplay on Thursday to take on South Park.
