MONTE VISTA – For the fourth straight season, the second-ranked Monte Vista High School baseball team has won the Class 2A Southern Peaks League after sweeping a doubleheader against Sanford Saturday at Adrian Gutierrez Memorial Field.
The Pirates will also go into the postseason undefeated.
Game 1
The Mustangs drew first blood with a run in the top of the first inning. Colton Reynolds reached on an error to lead off the inning and he stole second. He came home on Roman Edgar’s single.
That would be Sanfiord’s only lead and it wouldn’t last long as the Pirates s cored 10 runs in the bottom of the first. Kobe Jiron led off with a walk, and Chayse Bouet was safe on an error. Kobe Jiron scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 1-1.
Manny Jiron also walked, and Judah Howe tripled both Bouet and Manny Jiron home. Jakoby Ross drew a walk, and Landon Sanchez got an infield single to load the bases. Michael Hensley walked to plate Howe, and Kelby Mondragon walked to drive home Ross.
Kobe Jiron was safe on an error to score Sanchez, and Bouet doubled home Hensley and Mondragon. Kobe Jron s cored on an error, and Azariah Hurtado singled home Bouet.
Monte Vista scored four more runs in the second. Howe led off with a walk, and Ross reached on an error. Sanchez was also safe on an error to score Howe, and Mondragon was hit by a pitch to fill the sacks.
A balk brought Ross home, and Bouet hit his second straight double to bring home Sanchez and Mondragon.
The Pirates added three more runs in the third. Howe hits his second triple of the game to lead off the inning and he scored as Ross was safe on an outfield error. Sanchez doubled, and Ross scored on a wild pitch. Sanchez scored on Domyon Naranjo’s groundout.
The game ended after four innings on the 15-run rule.
Sanchez went the distance on the mound for the Pirates and he earned the win. He allowed one unearned run and two hits, and he struck out five, walked none and hit one batter.
Trason Gartrell started for the Mustangs and took the loss. He gave up 14 runs and five hits with one strikeout, six walks and one hit batter. Jeffery Peterson ended the game and surrendered three runs and two hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
Monte Vista had seven hits and were led by Howe who went 2-2 with two triples and two RBIs, Sanchez who went 2-3 with a double and one RBI, and Bouet who went 2-4 with two doubles and four RBIs.
Sanford’s two hits were by Edgar and Gartrell who both went 1-2.
Game 2
The Pirates took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Kobe Jiron was safe on an error to lead off the inning. Bouet then tripled to plate Kobe Jiron.
Manny Jiron walked, and Howe singled to bring home Bouet and Manny Jiron. Howe went to second on the throw to the infield and stole third. He scored on Ross’s groundout.
Monte Vista scored three runs in the second. Hensley walked and Mondragon singled. A pair of errors brought Hensley home, and Bouet tripled for the second straight inning to drive home Mondragon. Bouet scored on Hurtado’s groundout.
After a scoreless third inning, the Pirates scored six runs in the fourth. Mondragon started the rally with a single and stole second. He scored on Kobe Jiron’s single and Jiron also took second on the throw. Bouet doubled home Kobe Jiron, and Hurtado singled to plate Bouet.
Manny Jiron then hit a two-run home run.
Ross doubled and scored as Sanchez reached on an error.
The game ended after five innings on the 10-run rule.
Kobe Jiron pitched a no-hit shutout and he also struck out 12 and walked three.
Lucas Miller went the distance for Sanford and took the loss. He gave up 13 runs and 10 hits with four strikeouts and walked two.
The Pirates had 10 hits and were led by Bouet who went 3-3 with a double, two triples and three RBIs, and Mondragon who went 2-2.
Regionals are next
Monte Vista (21-0) will host a regional tournament on Saturday. The other teams in the tournament will be determined today.
Sanford (12-10) will also qualify for a regional tournament but will have to go on the road.
