Monte Vista baseball advances to state tournament

ALAMOSA – The Monte Vista High School baseball team won the Class 2A Region 6 Tournament in Yuma on Saturday and have advanced to play in the Class 2A State Tournament which begins this weekend at the Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.

The Pirates opened the regional tournament with a 7-2 win over Swink. The Lions scored a run in the top of the first, but Monte Vista scored five times in its half of the inning.

The Pirates scored a run in the fourth and sixth innings.

Kaden Mellott went the distance on the mound and he was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs and four hits and struck out 14 and walked only one.

The Pirates had five hits and were led by Chayse Bouet who went 2-2 with a double and two RBIs. Manny Jiron led in RBIs with four.

Monte Vista then faced the host team Yuma in the regional final and won 6-0. The Pirates scored one run in the first, three in the second and one in the third and fifth innings.

Kobe Jiron went the distance and recorded a no-hitter to earn the win. He struck out nine and walked four.

The Pirates had six hits with Judah Howe going 1-2, Kaden Madrid going 1-3, Jakoby Ross going 1-3 with two RBIs,  Manny Jiron going 1-3 with one RBI, Bouet going 1-4, and Mellott going 1-4 with one RBI.

Monte Vista (16-6) will be the eighth seed at the state tournament and it will face top-seeded Forge Christian in the first round. The Fury are 21-4 and they won the Metro League with a 13-1 record.

First pitch is at 9:30 a.m. at Hobbs Field.

Should the Pirates win, they will play either fourth-seeded Peyton or fifth-seeded Highland at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. If they lose, the will play Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Alamosa’s season ends

The Alamosa High School baseball season came to an end at the Class 3A Region 5 Tournament Saturday in Johnstown.

The Mean Moose opened the tournament by defeating Brush 8-2. They scored a run in the first, then broke the game open in the second with five runs. The Beetdiggers scored a run in the fourth, but Alamosa scored twice in the fifth. Brush scored once in the sixth.

Xavier Lujan went the distance for Alamosa and was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs and four hits and had five strikeouts and two walks.

The Mean Moose had 10 hits and were led by Brennan Maez who went 2-4 with one RBI, Carlos Garcia who went 2-4, and Tony Griego who went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Alamosa then met regional host Resurrection Christian in the final but lost 9-0. The Cougars scored six runs in the second and three in the third.

Statistics for the Mean Moose were unavailable.

Alamosa finished the season with 11 wins and 13 losses.
