Mean Moose take two from Wolverines

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team remained in a tie for first place in the Intermountain League on Friday as it swept a doubleheader from Bayfield at Ortega Middle School.

The Mean Moose had a late rally to win the first game, 11-6, and left no doubt in the nightcap winning by a score of 10-0.

Those were two big games we needed to have,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “It sets us up good for next week going into Cortez, which I think is going to determine the league champions.”

Kechter was impressed by the Mean Moose’s pitching and defense.

“I thought that our defense and pitching were really good today,” Kechter said. “If we keep that up, we’re going to be hard to beat.”

Game 1

The Wolverines scored first with a run in the top of the first inning. Estevan Gonzalez led off with a single, and Josiah Mayfield walked. Tavian Box was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Gonzales came home on Cameron Queen’s infield single.

Alamosa scored twice in its half of the first. Tony Griego singled, and Jonah Pittman walked. Brennan Maez also walked, and Jaidyn Burciaga singled home Griego. Pittman scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 Mean Moose lead.

Bayfield answered with three runs in the second. Caleb Beck had a leadoff single, and Tyler Harriman also singled. Hudson Tisher reached on an error to load the bases. Daemon Christner singled home Beck to tie the score, and Gonzalez singled to drive home Harriman to give the Wolverines the lead. Tisher scored on Mayfield’s sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless third inning, the Mean Moose regained the lead with a five-run fourth. Elliot Mackey led off with a single, and Foster Boyd followed with a double. Mackey scored on a wild pitch, and Griego reached on an error with Alex Montoya, who was courtesy running for Boyd to come home. Pittman singled to drive home Griego with the go-ahead run.

A.J. Baker walked, and both Pittman and Baker came home on wild pitches to give Alamosa a 7-4 lead.

The Mean Moose scored three more runs in the fifth. Camdyn Montoya and Griego both singled, and Pittman slammed a three-run homer to right center field to increase the lead to 10-4.

The Wolverines scored twice in the top of the sixth. Christner was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Mayfield reached on an error. After Box singled, Queen walked to drive home Christner, and Aiden Tipton was hit by a pitch to plate Mayfield.

The Mean Moose scored another run in the bottom of the sixth. Maez hit a leadoff double, and Burciaga followed with a single. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and later a balk to bring home Maez.

Griego started on the mount for Alamosa and earned the win. He allowed six runs and nine hits and he struck out five, walked four and hit one batter. Pitman finished the game and got the save. He retired all four batters he faced including two strikeouts.

The Mean Moose had 10 hits and were led by Pittman who went 2-3 with a home run and four RBIs, Maez who went 2-3 with a double, and Griego who went 2-4 with one RBI.

Game 2

Alanosa took the early lead with a run in the first. Pittman doubled with two outs and scored on Baker’s single.

The second inning was scoreless, and the Mean Moose scored twice in the thirds. Burciaga led off with a walk and Griego reached on an error. Baker walked to load the bases, and Boyd singled home Burciaga and Griego for a 3-0 lead.

 Alamosa pulled away with five runs in the fourth. Nelson Arambula hit a leadoff double and scored on Burciaga’s single. Griego also singled, and Pittman singled to bring home Burciaga and Griego. Pittman stole second and scored on Baker’s groundout. Maez continued the inning with a single, and Boyd walked. Maez scored on Camdyn Montoya’s groundout.

The Mean Moose scored two more runs in the fifth. Griego hit av two-out single and scored on Pittman’s triple. Baker singled to plate Pittman and end the game on the 10-run rule.

Evan Anderson went the distance on the mound and threw a two-hit shutout. He struck out three and walked two.

The Mean Moose had 12 hits in the second game and were led by Pittman who went 3-4 including a double, a triple and three RBIs, and Griego who went 2-4.

What’s next

Alamosa (11-7, 4-0) will travel to Cortez on Friday to face fifth-ranked Montezuma-Cortez. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
