ALAMOSA – The Adams State University men’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak on Friday as it defeated Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) University 100-90 at Plachy Hall gym.
Parker Martens gave the Nighthawks the early lead with a 3-point basket, but Dillan Baker tied the score. Martens hit another three, but that would be Northwest Nazarene’s final lead of the game as Baker and Luke Williams scored in the paint, and Wyatt Helming drained a trey to give the Grizzlies a 10-6 advantage.
Briggs Ranstrom brought the Nighthawks within a 10-9 deficit, but Helming scored five more points. Aaron Murphy ended the run to bring Northwest Nazarene within 15-11, but Jayce King and Chaz Holman both made 3-pointers to extend the lead to 21-11.
Kyelin King made two free throws for the Nighthawks, however, Tajuan Jamestown and Jayce King both made treys for a 27-13 lead. Kyelin King made a layup and added a free throw, but Luke Williams drove for a layup.
Ranstrom made another three, however, Baker drove for a layup and Jarmell Johnson made a pair from the line. Emilek Jallow’s layup increased the lead to 35-19.
Kyelin King ended the run. Ivan Dorn then dunked the ball to give ASU a 37-23 advantage.
Easton Reagan made two free tosses and Ranstrom a layup. Reagan made two more free thorws to bring the Nighthawks within 37-29.
Williams knocked down a jumper, bit Ranstrom buried a three to close the margin to 39-33. Williams responded by scoring six straight points for a 45-33 advantage.
R.J. Chatman made a pair from the line, but Williams made three out of four free throws in the final minute of the first half to give the Grizzlies a 48-37 lead at halftime.
Johnson opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but Martens answered with a three on the other side. Williams and Jallow both scored for a 55-40 lead. Aaron Murphy made a pair from the line, and Garrett Hawkes made a three to bring Northwest Nazarene within 56-46.
Baker made a three and Jallow went in for a dunk for a 61-46 lead. But Martens made another trey, and Kyelin King a layup to cut the lead to 61-51.
Jerrick Guidry scored for the Grizzlies, but Martens made another three. Jayce King drained a three for a 66-54 advantage.
Jallow made two free throws, and Johnson and Helming one apiece. Ranstrom’s layup helped the Nighthawks reduce the deficit to 70-60.
Williams split at the line, and Jayce King drained a trey. Hawkes also made a 3-pointer, but Williams made a jumper for a 78-63 lead.
The Nighthawks closed to within 78-72 with 6:20 left in the game. Johnson made two free throws, and Baker a layup and a free throw for a 83-72 lead.
Reagan and Jamestown both made layups for their respective teams, but Ranstrom made another three and Hawkes a layup to cut the ASU lead to 85-79 with 4:14 remaining. Williams answered with a three, and Johnson a layup to increase the lead to 90-79.
Martens made another trey, but the Grizzlies used free throw shooting to put the game on ice as they made 10 free tosses in the final two minutes.
Williams led ASU in scoring with 26 points. Baker scored 19, Johnson 14, and Jayce King 12.
Martens was Northwest Nazarene’s top scorer with 22 points, followed by Ranstrom with 18, Hawkes with 15, Kyelin King withbv14 and Reagan with 10.
Adams State (7-5) will break for the holidays. It will resume play on Jan. 8 when it hosts Westminster (Utah) University. The women play at 5:30 p.m., and the men at 7:30 p.m.
