DENVER – The season came to an end for the second-ranked Centauri High School girls basketball team as it lost to 10th-ranked Wiggins, 32-30, in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym.
The Lady Tigers got off to a 4-0 lead on layups by Karsyn Kerr and Kennedy Kerr. Rylie McCarroll put the Lady Falcons on the board with a free throw, and Braelyn Tucker made two free tosses to cut the deficit to 4-3. Kallie Green and Juliet Leon pushed the Wiggins lead to 8-3, but Joselyn McCarroll and Tucker both made baskets, and Rylie McCarroll split at the line to tie the score at 8-8.
Kennedy Kerr made two free throws and Kellie Viccharalle made a layup, but Denver Holman scored to cut the deficit to 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Centauri dominated in the second quarter, outscoring Wiggins 10-0. Joselyn McCarroll tied the score, and Tucker put the Lady Falcons into the lead with a layup. She later added a free throw for a 15-12 lead.
Sydney Haslett and Joselyn McCarroll both scored, and Alivia Norton split at the line for a 20-12 Centauri lead at halftime.
Wiggins came out hot for the second half. Ali Beauprez made two baskets and Kennedy Kerr one to reduce the lead to 20-18. Karsyn Kerr split at the line, but Joselyn McCarroll made a layup for a 22-19.
Kennedy Kerr knocked down a jumper, but Tucker made a pair of charity tosses. Leon made two free throws, but Rylie McCarroll just beat the buzzer for a 26-23 Centauri lead at the end of the third quarter.
Kennedy Kerr opened the fourth quarter with the only 3-point basket of the game to tie the score at 26-26. Viccharalle and Karsyn Kerr both scored to give the Lady Tigers a 30-26 advantage.
Hannah Curtis sank a jumper to cut the lead to 30-28. Kennedy Kerr made two free throws, but Joselyn McCarroll scored 10 seconds later.
After Wiggins made four free throws, the Lady Falcons had a chance to win. However, Hannah Curtis’ 3-point attempt bounced off the rim.
Joselyn McCarroll led the Lady Falcons in scoring with 10 points, followed by Tucker with nine.
Centauri struggled at the free throw line making only eight out of 22 attempts.
Kennedy Kerr led Wiggins with 11 points.
Centauri finished the season with 22 wins and four losses.
