Centauri boys win twice, Alamosa once at ASU Classic

ALAMOSA – The Centauri High School boys basketball team won both of its games and Alamosa split its games at the Fifth Annual ASU Christmas Classic this past weekend at Adams State University’s Plachy Hall gym.

The Falcons recorded wins over Gunnison 58-51 on Friday and over Summit 51-40 on Saturday. The Mean Moose lost to Summit 51-47 on Friday and defeated Gunnison 63-55 on Saturday.

Centauri 58, Gunnison 51

Landon Miller gave the Cowboys an early 2-0 lead, but Jayse Maestas tied the score. Max Peluso put Gunnison back on top, but Maestas scored again.

Peluso split at the free throw line, but Maestas scored his third basket of the game to give Centauri a 6-5 lead. Miller put the Cowboys back in front, but Donovan Jarvies gave the lead back to the Falcons.

Jack Stone helped Gunnison back into the lead, but Shandon Gilleland hit a 3-point basket, and Dallyn King a layup to put Centauri ahead 13-9. Maestas drained a three to give the Falcons a 16-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Gilleland and Donovan Jarvies extended the lead to 20-11 early in the second quarter, and Donovan Jarvies hit a three for a 23-11 lead.

Jake Ebbott made a layup and added a free throw for Gunnison’s first points of the period. But Gilleland scored two baskets and King one as the lead grew to 29-14. Asher Woytek scored a layup, Miller two free throws, and Stone a 3-pointer to help Gunnison close within 30-21at halftme.

Sean Jarvies began the third quarter with a trey, but Ebbott answered with one on the other end. Keadon McGinnis and Gilleand both scored for a 37-24 advantage.

After a Peluso layup, Gilleland scored another layup. Peluso scored again as well, and Jorge Perez also scored to close the margin to 40-31.

Gilleland s cored again to close out the third with the Falcons leading 42-31.

Peluso scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Sean Jarvies and Carson Shawcroft both scored for the Falcons. Peluso made two free throws, but Gilleland made a three for a 49-35 lead.

Gunnison closed to within 563-47 with Peluso scoring six points. McGinnis and Donovan Jarvies both scored, and Meastas split at the line to close out the scoring.

Gilleland led Centauri in scoring with 19 points, followed by Maestas with 12.

The Cowboys were led by Peluso with 18 points, followed by Miller with 10.

Centauri 58, Gunnison 51

Summit 51, Alamosa 47

Matthew Solis put Alamosa on the board first with a jumper, but Alonso Baca tied the score. Beck Lazzlo then hit a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

Victor Zepeda cut the lead to one point, but Baca scored again. After two free throws by Josh Gonzalez, Hogan Tobias tipped in a miss for a 9-6 Summit lead.

Gonzales and Zepeda both scored to put the Mean Moose back into the lead at 10-9. Kingston Wilcox also scored to push the lead to three.

Baca and J.P. Vietti put Summit back into the lead at 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Wilcox made a trey to tie the score at 15-15 early in the second quarter. But the Tigers scored six straight points to regain the lead at 21-15.

Wilcox made a pair of free throws, but Tobias scored again. Noel Gutierrez hit a jumper to bring Alamosa within 23-19 at halftime.

Vietti scored the first points of the second half, but Zepeda also scored. Vietti scored again, but Zepeda drained a three and a layup to cut the deficit to 27-26.

Ceasar Lozano made a layup for the Tigers, but Zepeda scored again. Oumar Ba gave Summit a three-point lead, but Zepeda made another trey to tie the score at 31-31.

Lozano made two baskets to give Summit a 35-31 lead after the third quarter.

Lozano scored five more points early in the fourth, however, Gonzalez made a layup and added a free throw. Vietti and Lozano both scored to give the Tigers a 44-34 advantage.

Zepeda made three baskets to bring the Mean Moose within 44-40. He later made two free throws and made a 3-pointer to close the deficit to 46-45 with 1:12 left in the game.

The Tigers made three out of four free throws, but Zepeda stole an inbounds pass and drove for a layup with six seconds remaining. However, Baca made two free throws to wrap up the scoring.

Zepeda led Alamosa with 20 points.

Lozano was Summit’s leading scorer with 15 points, followed by Baca with 14.

Centauri 51, Summit 40

Baca opened the scoring with a jumper, but Maestas tied the score. McGinnis scored on a layup to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead.

Lozano tied the score at 4-4, but Donovan Jarvies put the Falcons back on top. Lozano tied the score again, but Gilleland and Maestas both scored for a 10-6 edge.

Lozano scored again for the Tigers, but Gilleland scored for a 12-8 Centauri lead at the first quarter.

Baca and Lozano both scored to tie the score at 12-12 early in the second quarter. However, King scored five points for a 17-12 Falcons lead.

Lozano scored two straight baskets, but McGinnis split at the line. Baca scored again to deadlock the score at 18-18.

Gilleland made a 3-pointer and Sean Jarvies a layup to give Centauri a 23-18 lead at halftime.

Donovan Jarvies began the second half by splitting at the line. McGinnis drove for a layup and Shawcroft hit a three to increase the lead to 29-18.

Tobias split at the line and Baca and Lozano both made layups to bring the Tigers within 29-23. But Gilleland made a jumper and King a trey to push the lead to 34-24.

Lozano scored for Summit, but Sean Jarvies and Donovan Jarvies both scored for a 38-26 Falcons lead at the end of the third.

Danny Romero scored the first points of the fourth quarter for Summit, but Gilleland scored on a layup. Baca made a layup and Jaeger Roberts two free throws to cut the lead to 40-32.

Gilleland hit a jumper, but Baca did the same. Donovan Jarvies scored in the paint, and McGinnis made two free throws.

Baca, Lazzlo and Lozano all scored to cut the deficit to 47-40. But Donovan Jarvies made a layup and Sean Jarvies two free throws to conclude the scoring.

Gilleland led Centauri with 13 points and Donovan Jarvies scored 10.

Lozano was Summit’s top scorer with 18 points, followed by Baca with 15.

Peluso split at the line to give the Cowboys an early 1-0 lead. But Solis made a 3-pointer to put the Mean Moose in front at 3-1.

Perez also split at the line and Ebbott made a layup to put Gunnison back into the lead.

Zepeda made a short jumper for a 5-4 Alamosa lead. Perez tied the score, but Gabe Mora made a trey for an 8-5 Mean Moose lead.

The Cowboys scored the final seven points of the quarter, with Peluso scoring all of them, for a 12-8 lead.

Miller made two free throws and two baskets to give Gunnison a 19-8 advantage. Nelson Arambula split at the line, and after a Perez layup, Zepeda scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, and Jaidyn Burciaga three as the Mean Moose closed the deficit to 21-20.

Woytek and Ryder Vincent both scored layups and Perez two free throws for a 27-20 Gunnison lead. But Zepeda drained another trey to cut the lead to 27-23 at halftime.

Zepeda opened the second-half scoring with a layup, and Gonzalez made two straight baskets to give the Mean Moose a 29-27 lead.

Ebbott tied the score, and Peluso put the Cowboys back in front. After Miller split at the line, Zepeda made a layup. Miller pushed the Gunnison lead to 34-31, but Kingston scored in the paint.

Perez made two from the line, and Miller a layup for a 38-32 lead. But Mora made two free throws, and Burciaga a jumper to close the deficit to 38-37.

Zepeda and Burciaga both drained threes for a 43-39 lead. Arambula and Burciaga both scored to increase the lead to 47-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Zepeda made the lead 49-40 early in the fourth. But Miller made one of two free throws, and Perez a layup. Miller also made a layup to bring the Cowboys within 49-45.

Burciaga made four free throws, but Miller made back-to-back layups. Burciaga drained a three and Zepeda split at the line for a 57-49 advantage.

After a Perez layup, Zepeda made four free throws and Burciaga two to put the game on ice.

Zepeda led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Burciaga with 19.

Miller was Gunnison’s top scorer with 16 points, followed by Perez with 15 and Peluso with 12.

With the win, Alamosa has surpassed last year’s win total.

What’s next

Both Alamosa (5-2) and Centauri (4-2) will break for the holidays. They will both make a trip to the Western Slope to resume the season in January. The Mean Moose will play at Montrose on Jan. 9 and at Delta on Jan. 10. The Falcons will play at Delta on Jan. 9 and at Montrose on Jan. 10.
