Alamosa wins regional, advances to state

ALAMOSA – The top-ranked Alamosa High School volleyball team took two wins at the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament Friday at the AHS gym.

The Mean Moose first defeated DSST: College View in three sets – 25-9, 25-13 and 25-9. They then swept Salida by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-14.

By winning the region, Alamosa advances to the Class 3A State Tournament which will begin Thursday at the Denver. Coliseum.

“Now we’re going to work hard the next few days and we’re going to give state a heck of a run,” said Alamosa coach Annie Mortensen.

Alamosa got off to a good start against the Wolves by scoring the first six points. It continued that momentum to a 25-9 win in the first set.

DSST took its only lead to open the second set, but the Mean Moose regained the momentum and defeated the Wolves 25-13.

The third set was tied twice early, but once again, the Mean Moose took control and went on to a 25-9 win.

Ashlyn Rice led the Alamosa offense with 33 assists. Aubrey Rothermich led the hitting game with 17 kills, followed by Laci Christensen with six and Kyla Hawkins with seven.

The Mean Moose served up 19 aces and were led. By Rothermich with five, and Ashlyn Rice and Jaelin Garcia both with four. Leela Gutierrez and Addison Rice both had two, and Christensen and Brooklyn Schraeder both had one.

In the second match of the tournament, Salida defeated DSST: College View in three sets. The scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21.

Alamosa and Salida then met for the region championship in the third match.

Salida took an early lead in the first set, but Alamosa went on an 8-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. The Mean Moose continued the momentum to a 25-10 win.

The Spartans took a 4-1 lead to begin the second set. But once again, Alamosa took control and rolled to a 25-9 win.

Alamosa never trailed in the third set as it won 25-14.

Ashlyn Rice again led the offense with 33 assists. Rothermich again led the hitting game with 18 kills, followed by Christensen with 11, Arreli Felix with eight, Kyla Hawkins with seven and Kadie Hawkins with four.

Alamosa had nine service aces and was led by Christensen with three, and Gutierrez and Addison Rice both with two. Ashlyn Rice and Rothermich both had one.

Alamosa (24-1) will earn a first-round bye at the state tournament and will play either eighth-ranked Sterling or ninth-ranked Gunnison Thursday at approximately 2 p.m.

“That really always helps the scheduling a lot,” Mortensen said. “So we’ll start planning the trip and wait to get how the other regions to finish and plan our next move.”

Three other San Luis Valley volleyball teams – Centauri, Sanford and Sargent – also won their regions and qualified for their respective state tournaments.

Centauri

Tenth-ranked Centauri hosted the Class 3A Region 10 Tournament on Friday and defeated Brush and Coal Ridge.

The Falcons defeated the Beetdiggers 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16. After Coal Ridge defeated Brush, Centauri scored a sweep of the Titans by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-12.

Centauri (17-8) will take on fifth-ranked The Classical Academy (23-2) at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Sanford

The sixth-ranked Mustangs were the host team of the Class 2A Region 6 Tournament on Saturday and they scored wins over Haxtun and Highland.

Sanford went four sets to defeat the Fightin’ Bulldogs. It won the first set but lost the second 25-20. The Mustangs took the final two sets 26-24 and 27-25.

Highland defeated Haxtun in the second match.

In the third match, Sanford won in three sets against the Huskies by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-13.

Sanford (20-3) will play Yuma in the Class 2A State Tournament at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Sargent

The eighth-ranked Farmers won a single match against Lone Star in the Class 1A Region 8 Tournament on Saturday at the SHS gym. Sargent won the first set 25-12 but lost the second 26-24. The Farmers son the next two 25-18 and 25-20.

Sargent (22-2) will play ninth-ranked Evangel Christian in the Class 1A State Tournament Thursday at 8 a.m.

Three other SLV teams played in regional tournaments, but were eliminated

Monte Vista

The Pirates played in the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament Saturday in Denver. The Pirates won their first match against Loveland Classical 19-25, 25-14, 25-21, 26-28 and 15-11. However, they lost to Denver Christian 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.

Monte Vista’s final record was 13 wins and 10 losses.

Center

The Vikings were defeated in both of their matches at the Class 2A Region 1 Tournament Friday at Simla.

Center lost to top-ranked Simla 25-5, 25-2 and 25-4. It then lost to Dayspring Christian Academy 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19.

Center finished the season with 12 wins and 12 losses.

Del Norte

Del Norte competed in the Class 2A Region 7 Tournament Saturday in Swink and was defeated in both of its matches.

The Tigers lost to Swink 25-5, 25-14 and 25-18, and they lost to Heritage Christian 25-21, 18-25, 25-14, and 25-22.

Del Norte had a final record of nine wins and 14 losses.
