LAKEWOOD – The 2025 Colorado High School Activities Association track and field meet wrapped up Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium with several athletes for the San Luis Valley competing.

Class 3A

Alamosa

The Alamosa High School track program swept both 3,200-meter run races on Friday. Ethan Merrick won the boys race in 9:41.31, and Elizabeth McQuitty won the girls 3,200 in 11:17.35.

Merrick took had a good strategy to score the win. He stayed with the front of the pack for the first six laps, then he kicked it into high gear on the final two laps and pulled away for the win.

“The goal was to stay with them for as long as possible,” Merrick said. “I just wanted to go out hard, because when you slowly come out, then people come with you.”

Merrick is only a freshman. He wants to keep winning state titles for the rest of his high school career.

“I want to get it all four years,” Merrick said.

Merrick also ran in the 1,600 meters on Saturday. However, he finished 17th in 4:40.78.

It was an entirely different race for McQuitty.

Eaton’s Delaney Reuter actually won the race, and McQuitty was second. But Reuter was disqualified and McQuitty was named the official winner.

McQuitty didn’t want to win that way. In fact, she was adamant about who won.

“I did not win,” McQuitty said. “Delaney won. She deserves that race. She ran amazingly, and it was very unfair. We went clear to cut into lane 5. She deserves to win.”

“It was sportsmanship at the highest level,” said McQuitty’s mother and Alamosa head coach Jen McQuitty.

McQuitty later ran in the 800 meters on Friday. However, she finished 12th in 2:27.32. On Saturday, she finished in sixth place in the 1,600 5:12.06. Reuter was the winner of that race and left little doubt this time – winning in about 1 ½ seconds.

McQuitty will now head to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs to compete in both cross country and track.

“I’m excited to compete, and have great competition,” McQuitty said. “I know I’m going to be pushed.”

Also for the Alamosa boys on Friday, Jeremiah DeLaCerda was 15th in the 3,200 in 10:22.37, and Cody Williams was 16th in the 800 in 2:08.43. Williams was fifth in the 1,600 on Saturday in 4:309.74.
