ALAMOSA – The seventh-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team got off to a good start when it hosted Pagosa Springs Friday at the AHS gym. However, the visiting Pirates kept hanging around. But the Mean Moose were able to hold off Pagosa for a 37-33 win.
Audrina Knorr opened the scoring with a 3-point basket, which would be the Mean Moose’s only trey of the game. Jaelin Garcia then made a layup to give Alamosa a 5-0 lead.
Kaila Limebrook made one of two from the free throw line for the Pirates’ first point, but Jaelin Garcia scored again to extend the lead to 7-1.
Amberlynn Snarr accounted for Pagosa’s first basket of the game, but Garcia scored again. Charity Domingo and Ximena Garcia both scored to cut the Alamosa lead to 9-7.
Jaelin Garcia and Aubrey Rothermich both scored in the final minutes of the first quarter to increase the lead to 13-7.
There was no scoring for the first 5 ½ minutes of the second quarter, but Kyla Hawkins drove for a layup to give the Mean Moose a 15-10 lead. However, Domingo hit a three.
Knorr scored with 23 seconds remaining to give Alamosa a 17-10 lead at halftime.
Limebrook opened the second-half scoring with a trey, but Arreli Felix and Knorr both scored. Garcia split at the line to increase the lead to 22-13.
Adelyn Hittle buried a 3-pointer, and Limebrook hit a short jumper to bring the Pirates within 22-18. Egypt Holman made two free throws, and Jaelin Garcia made a jumper for a 26-18 lead.
Garcia and Domingo both scored to again bring Pagosa within a four-point deficit. Knorr made two free throws and Ashlyn Rice made a layup. Hittle made one of two free throws to reduce the lead to 30-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Rothermich scored the first points of the third quarter, but Limebrook made another three. Jaelin Garcia nailed a jumper, but Domingo knocked down a 3-pointer to bring Pagosa within a 34-29 deficit.
Holman drove for a layup, but Ximena Garcia made one of two free throws. Domingo made her third trey of the game to cut the Alamosa lead to 36-33 with 12 seconds remaining.
Jaelin Garcia made one of two from the line with four seconds to play.
Jaelin Garcia led the Mean Moose in scoring with 14 points, followed by Knorr with nine.
Domingo was Pagosa’s leading scorer with 13 points.
Alamosa (8-3, 3-0) hosted Centauri on Tuesday night. It will host Ignacio on Friday and travel to Lamar on Saturday.
