ALAMOSA – A week ago, the ninth-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team was defeated at Monte Vista by a score of 35-32.
Tuesday, the teams met again this time at Alamosa. This time, the Mean Moose defeated the Pirates 39-30 to even the two-game series at a game apiece.
“Both teams rally game prepared and I think the intensity was there,” said Alamosa coach James Romero. “We were able to hit a few more shots and made some defensive stops. It was a good game.”
Aubrey Rothermich put Alamosa on the board. First, followed by a layup by Jaelin Garcia. Rothermich scored again to give the Mean Moose a 6-0 lead.
Destiny Pacheco split at the free throw line for the Pirates’ first point, but Garcia scored again to increase the lead to 8-1.
Hannah Henderhan scored Monte Vista’s first field goal, and Madison Henderan followed with another layup. Rothermich scored again, but Pacheco made a 3-point basket.
Garcia scored another layup to give Alamosa a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Madison Henderhan split at the free throw line to open the second-quarter scoring. Audrina Knorr buried a three, and Kyla Hawkins scored in the paint for a 17-9 advantage.
Cindy Cereceres made two free throws, and she later split at the line to cut the deficit to 17-12. But Hawkins and Knorr both scored to give the Mean Moose a 21-12 lead at halftime.
Reagan Futrell scored the first points of the second half, but Rothermich knocked down a jumper. Evie Hinds and Cereceres both scored, and Hinds made a 3-pointer to cut the Alamosa lead to 23-21.
Rothermich made two free tosses to end the Monte Vista run, then Leela Gutierrez made a trey. Garcia made a layup for a 30-21 Mean Moose lead at the end of the third quarter.
Hinds scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Garcia scored again. Knorr then scored five points including a 3-pointer to give the Mean Moose their largest lead at 37-23.
Cereceres split at the line and later made a three to cut the lead to 37-27. Garcia knocked down a jumper, but Futrell made three free throws to wrap up the scoring.
Alamosa had three players score in double figures. Garcia led the way with 12 points, and Knorr and Rothermich both scored 10.
Cereceres was Monte Vista’s leading scorer with nine points.
Alamosa (13-5, 7-2) played at Pagosa Springs on Friday. It will play its final home game of the regular season today as the Mean Moose hosts Pueblo Centennial at 12:30 p.m.
“We’re in our final stretch, so we’re taking it one game at a time,” Romero said.
Monte Vista (10-8, 4-4) played at Bayfield on Friday. It will travel to Centauri today with game time schedule for 2:30 p.m.
