Alamosa girls run to 59-16 win over Bayfield

ALAMOSA – The eighth-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team had little trouble with Bayfield on Friday as it won by a score of 59-16 at the AHS gym.

Jaelin Garcia gave the Lady Mean Moose the early lead, but Renae Foutz hit a 3-point basket to give the Lady Wolverines the lead. Aubrey Rothermich gave the lead back to Alamosa, but Grace Brown’s layup gave Bayfield a 5-4 edge.

That would be the final time that the Lady Wolverines would have the lead. Audrina Knorr put the Lady Mean Moose back in front for good, and Morgan Ortega followed with a pair of free throws. Knorr then made a layup and added a free throw for an 11-5 advantage.

Ortega and Rothermich both scored two baskets in the final 2:24 and Alamosa led 19-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Garcia hit a jumper and Rothermich scored two more baskets to push the lead to 25-5.

Foutz made two free throws and a trey to end the run, but Ortega made a three, and Alexia Montoya and Kadie Hawkins both scored to increase the lead to 32-10.

Bayfield made three out of four free throws to end the first half, but Alamosa led 32-13 at halftime.

Vivien Clance opened the second half with a layup, but that would be the Lady Wolverines’ only scoring of the third quarter. The Lady Mean Moose scored the next 18 points with Rothermich scoring six of them. Garcia and Vanessa Villalva both scored four, Hawkins two, and Emmalie Quintana and Montoya one apiece.

Alamosa had a 50-15 lead at the end of the third.

Clance scored the Lady Wolverines’ only point of the fourth quarter, which was played under a running clock. Cammi Maestas scored six points in the quarter, Kamryn Moller scored two, and Leela Gutierrez one.

Rothermich led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Ortega with nine.

Foutz was Bayfield’s leading scorer with eight points.

The Lady Mean Moose also defeated Montezuma-Cortez 46-25 on the road on Friday to run their winning streak to five games. It also played at Monte Vista on Tuesday.

Alamosa (14-5, 6-2) will host second-ranked Pagosa Springs on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
