LA JARA – It was a typical rivalry game when the Centauri High School girls basketball team, ranked second in Class 3A, hosted Alamosa, ranked 10th in Class 4A, Tuesday at the CHS gym.

The Lady Falcons had an 11-point lead in the secondquarter, only to see the Lady Mean Moose rally twice later in the second half. But when the dust settled, Centauri came away with a 43-35 win.

Joselyn McCarroll put the Lady Falcons on the board first with a layup. But Aubrey Rothermich and Morgan Ortega hit back-to-back 3-point baskets, and Rothermich scored from a shorter distance to give the Lady Mean Moose an 8-2 lead.

That would be the only time Alamosa would lead and it didn’t last long. Braelyn Tucker made two free throws, and then Hannah Curtis and Joselyn McCarroll both knocked down jumpers to tie the score at 8-8. Tucker then split at the line to put the Lady Falcons into the lead.

Rylie McCarroll made a layup, but Alexia Montoya made a jumper for the Lady Mean Moose. Joselyn McCarroll then made a three as time expired and Centauri led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Joselyn McCarroll and Hannah Curtis both scored baskets to open the second quarter, and then Tucker made a jumper and a free throw to give Centauri its largest lead at 21-10.

Audrina Knorr ended the Lady Falcons’ run, but Joselyn McCarroll scored again. Ortega then made another trey, and Arreli Felix made one of two free throws to bring the Lady Mean Moose within 25-18 at halftime.

Tucker scored the first points of the second half, but Knorr drained a 3-pointer. Tucker answered with a three on the other side, but Jaelin Garcia scored two baskets, Ortega hit a jumper and Knorr split at the line to bring Alamosa within 30-28.

Rylie McCarroll ended the Alamosa rally and Centauri had a 32-28 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Jocelyn Jarvies and Tucker both scored to increase the lead to 36-28. But Ortega scored seven consecutive points including a 3-point basket, to cut the deficit to 36-35 with 2:40 left in the game.

However, that would be the last scoring for Alamosa. Hannah Curtis made a three, and Rylie McCarroll scored in the paint. Alyvia Norton wrapped up the scoring with two free throws.

Tucker was Centauri’s leading scorer with 12 points. Ortega led Alamosa with 13 points.

Centauri (13-2, 5-0) will play at Pagosa Springs on Saturday with first place in the Intermountain League on the line. Tip-off is at 2:30 p.m.

Alamosa (9-5, 2-2) hosted Ignacio on Friday. It will host a nonleague game against Lamar on Saturday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
