ALAMOSA – The 10th-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team got back into the win column this past weekend with wins over Bayfield 56-7, and over Montezuma-Cortez, 55-23.
“We just had to get back to where we are and some fundamental defense,” said Alamosa coach James Romero. “We need to work on where we need to be as a team.”
Audrina Knorr got the Mean Moose off to a good start with two free throws, followed by a layup by Jaelin Garcia. Siana Elliott scored the Panthers’ first points, but Knorr made a layup and later a pair of 3-point baskets for a 12-2 Alamosa lead.
Mia Glazner made a three for Cortez, but Aubrey Rothermich scored in the paint. Sariah Jackson also drained a trey to bring the Panthers within 14-8.
Garcia scored another layup, and Knorr made two more free throws. Rothermich made a layup and a 3-pointer to give the Mean Moose a 23-8 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Knorr opened the second-quarter scoring with a layup. Garcia made two baskets, and Kyla Hawkins and Ashlyn Rice one apiece to increase the lead to 33-8.
Jackson made another three, but Rothermich answered with a trey on the other end. Leela Gutierrez drove for a layup for a 38-13 Alamosa advantage at halftime.
Raya Hall split at the line to begin the second half. Shoshawna Washburn made a three to bring the Panthers within 38-17.
Garcia scored the Mean Moose’s first points of the third quarter, but Hall again split at the line. Knorr and Gutierrez both made one of two free throws to give Alamosa a 42-19 lead at the end of the period.
Gutierrez made a trey to begin the fourth quarter, followed by Brooklyn Schrader with a layup and Knorr with two more free throws. Hawkins’ layup gave the Mean Moose a 51-19 lead.
Elliott accounted for the Panthers’ first points of the fourth, but Hawkins scored back-to-back layups. Glazner’s layup wrapped up the scoring.
Knorr led the Mean Moose in scoring with 17 points, followed by Garcia and Rothermich both with 10.
Jackson was Cortez’s top scorer with seven points.
Alamosa 56, Bayfield 7
The Mean Moose opened the weekend with a 56-7 win over Bayfield Friday at the Wolverines’ gym.
Hawkins led the Mean Moose with 19 points, followed by Knorr with 12.
What’s next
Alamosa (12-5, 6-2) Hosted Monte Vista on Tuesday. It will play at Pagosa Springs on Friday and return home to face Pueblo Centennial Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
“We just want to take one game at a time,” Romero said.
