LA JARA – The top-ranked Alamosa High School boys wrestling team opened Intermountain League action on Thursday as it defeated Centauri 62-14 at the CHS gym.
“I was very happy with the performance,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “We got pretty nicked up last weekend at that tournament. We had 10 duals and that’s quite a load for some of those younger guys. But I was pretty happy with the way they performed tonight. I thought our guys performed very well.
“Alamosa is tough, all throughout the line-up,” said Centauri coach Micha Keys.
Julian Naranjo got the Mean Moose off to a good start as he pinned Marco Medina in 2:54 at 106 pounds.
Jeremiah DeLaCerda then faced Erik Garcia in the 113-pound match. DeLaCerda led 3-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second. DeLaCerda then pulled away in the third and won by a 16-0 technical fall at the 5:09 mark.
Anthony Meder then made quick work at 120 pounds as he pinned Noah Chavez in just 18 seconds.
Caden Casias accounted for the Falcons’ first victory against Jonathan Olsen at 126. Casias had a 5-2 lead after the first period and he increased the lead to 12-4 after the second. Olsen then made a comeback effort closing to within 12-11. He attempted to turn Casias onto his back but ran out of time.
Alamosa won the next two matches by fall. Pablito Rodriguez pinned Nathaniel Garcia in 2:37 at 132 pounds, and Uriah Martinez pinned Konner Horton in 2:21 at 138.
Daniel Martinez then took a technical fall win over Leland Chacon at 144 pounds. There was no scoring in the first period, but Martinez scored 16 points in the second for a 16-0 win at the 3:45 mark.
Tony Griego then faced Aiden Knecht at 150. Griego had a 7-0 lead after the first period and he increased the lead to 13-2 after the second. There was no scoring in the third period and Griego won by a 12-3 major decision.
Noah Weyers gave Centauri its second victory of the dual as he won by a technical fall over Elijah Salazar. Weyers led 7-0 after the first and 11-0 after the second. He recorded an escape and a takedown in the third to win 16-0 at the 4:16 mark.
Caleb Quintana won by forfeit at 165. Ryan Cordova scored a quick pin over Tyson Montague in 39 seconds at 175.
Spencer smith recorded the Falcons’ only win by fall at 190 pounds as he pinned Jovanny Mendoza in 4:54.
The Mean Moose won the final two matches by fall. Max Dokson pinned Dorian Quintana in 2:56 at 215 pounds, and Aaron Jordan pinned Aaden Quintana in 5:30 in the heavyweight match.
Alamosa wrestled two duals on Friday at Adams City. The Mean Moose competed against Adams City and Fort Collins.
It will then compete at the Les Mattocks Invitational at Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver today.
“It will be a little bit different this year,” Johnson. “Air Academy is going to it and they’re the No. 2 ranked team in Class 5A, so it won’t be as easy this year. We’ve won it the last three years. It will be a battle.”
Centauri will host the Randy and Naomi Keys dual meet tournament today.
“We have Pagosa Springs, Trinidad, Monte Vista, Buena Vista, Antonito and Walsenburg wrestling in the tournament,” Keys said. “We’ll get some matches and hopefully get closer to where we need to be at state.”
