16 SLV wrestlers advance to state semifinals

ALAMOSA – The first day of the 2025 Colorado High School Activities Association state wrestling tournament took place Thursday at Ball Arena in Denver.

A total of 16 wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals in their respective brackets. The semifinals took place on Friday evening.

CLASS 3A

Alamosa

The Alamosa High School boys wrestling team is in second place after the first day of competition with 46 ½ points. The Mean Moose trail only Brush with 55 ½.

Six of the seven Alamosa wrestlers won their first-round matches. Jeremiah DeLaCerda (106) won by technical fall over Brush’s Eian Blake 15-0 with the match ending at the 3:21 mark. Anthony Meder (113) pinned Berthoud’s Dax Diffendaffer in 2:17. Pablito Rodriguez (120) pinned Jefferson’s A.J. Alvarado in 3:34. Uriah Martinez (126) won by technical fall over Estes Park’s Matthew Lopez 16-1 with the match ending at 3:21. Dyson Woodward (150) took a 15-0 technical fall win over Delta’s Ben Morfitt in 1:40. Jace Morgan (165) scored a 12-5 decision over University’s Allen Mix.

The only Mean Moose not to win in the first round was Aaron Jordan (285) who lost a close 4-1 decision to Middle Park’s D.J. Kohlwey.

The Mean Moose had four wrestlers advance to the semifinals.

DeLaCerda (106) won by a 17-1 technical fall over Delta’s Jenesis Naranjo in 5:36. Meder pinned Mullen’s Antonito Herrera in 1:25. Martinez won by a 9-0 major decision over Grand Valley’s Jaysen Skeen. Woodward won by a 17-1 technical fall over Bennett’s Tommy Ceams in 2:22.

Falling in the quarterfinals were Rodriguez who lost by a 15-8 decision to Delta’s Dawsen Drozdik, and Morgan who was pinned by Centauri’s Troy Munson in 5:32.

Centauri

Centauri is in third place with 44 points with five of its eight wrestlers winning in the first round.

Matthew Salazar (106) won by a 15-0 technical fall over Holy Family’s Oscar Hageman in 1:53. Parker Buhr (157) took a 17-1 technical fall over Elizabeth’s Luke Ferland in 2:19. Munson (165) pinned Elizabeth’s Ashton Torrance in 3:38. Spencer Smith (175) pinned University’s Kaleb Brawner in 3:59. Dorian Quintana (215) won by an 18-4 major decision over James Irwin’s Aiden Randall.

Losing in the first round were Konnor Horton (132) who lost by an 18-2 technical fall to Platte Valley’s Logan Vannest, Nik Skadberg (144) who lost by a 9-6 decision to Resurrection Christian’s Joe Loecke, and Aaden Quintana (190) who was pinned by Fort Morgan’s Logan Aguirre in 4:50.

The Falcons also have four semifinalists.

Salazar pinned Valley’s Xavier Garcia in 1:08. Buhr pinned Florence’s Tanner Kammerdiener in 5:25. Munson pinned Morgan in 5:32. Smith had to go into overtime to score a 6-3 decision over Woodland Park’s Bryson Leonhart.

Dorian Quintana lost by a 16-1 technical fall to Brush’s Christaun Astorga in 4:33.

CLASS 2A

Center

Center is in fourth place in the Class 2A standings with 41 points. The Vikings trail Cedaredge and Highland both with 52 ½, and Wray with 45 ½.

Four of Center’s wrestlers won their first-round matches, Michael Archuleta (113) pinned North Fork’s Dan Robinson in 43 seconds. Andree Meraz (144) pinned Burlington’s Scout Humrich in 5:08. Aaron Valadez (150) pinned Dolores’ Nathan Hill in 3:05. Martin Palma (165) won by an 18-1 technical fall over Calhan’s Logan Johnson in 4:58.

Losing in the first round were Nicolas Palma (120) who lost by an 8-6 decision to Merino’s Casey Kaus, and Caden Ruggles (157) who lost by an 8-2 decision to Cedaredge’s Wylee Lorimor.

All four Vikings advanced to the semifinals.

Michael Archuleta won by a 19-2 technical fall over Meeker’s Eli Rundberg in 3:21. Meraz pinned West Grand’s Walker Howell in 5:31. Valadez pinned Dayspring Christian Academy’s Logan Clark in 3:21. Martin Palma won by an 11-4 decision over Dayspring Christian Academy’s Joseph Noce.

Monte Vista

Monte Vista is ninth with 28 points.

All six of the Pirates’ wrestlers won their first-round matches.

Mathieu Dean (106) won by a 5-1 decision over Del Norte’s Eulogio Garcia. Matthew Rodriguez (113) scored a 10-5 decision over Burlington’s Tristan Esquivel. Elijah Baumgardner took a 6-5 decision from Rocky Ford’s Jadiss Rodriguez. Kevin Cisneros (150) won by a 15-0 technical fall over Highland’s Collin Sanders in 2:16. Jacob Pacheco won by a 16-0 technical fall over Wray’s Brody Richards in 4:46. Jeremiah Baumgardner pinned Limon’s Zach Carr in 3:55.

Only two Monte Vista wrestlers advanced to the semifinals.

Cisneros won by an 8-1 decision over Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Owen Harris, and Jeremiah Baumgardner won by a 12-4 major decision over Buena Vista’s Abel Flowers, Buena Vista.

Falling in the quarterfinals were Dean who lost by a 15-0 technical fall to Fowler’s Stockton Sharon in 4:18, Rodriguez who was pinned by Rocky Ford’s Anthony Franco in 1:15, Elijah Baumgardner who lost by an 18-1 technical fall to Wray’s Austin Collins in 4:00, and Pacheco who was pinned by Holly’s Tripp DuVall in 24 seconds.

Del Norte

Del Norte is tied for 42nd with two points with only one of the Tigers winning in the first round.

Paul Neal (157) won by a 13-11 decision over West Grand’s Joe Probst West Grand. In the quarterfinals, he was pinned by Wray’s Casey Midcap in 1:07.

Also wrestling for Del Norte were Garcia (106) who lost by a 5-1 decision to Dean, Tomas Benvides (113) who was pinned by Crowley County’s Derrick Buford in 49 seconds, and Wyatt McLehaney (215) who was pinned by Limon’s Dreison Davis in 3:30.

Sargent

Sargent’s lone representative, Jaycian Sierra (132), lost by a 19-3 technical fall to Burlington’s Cooper Barnes, Burlington in 5:32.

Sierra Grande/Centennial

Both of Sierra Grande/Centennial’s state qualifiers were defeated in the first round. Diego Rodriguez (113) was pinned by Rocky Ford’s Anthony Franco in 1:40, and Bryant Tijerina (132) was pinned by Akron’s Kaleb Grauer in 1:56.

CLASS 4A GIRLS

Alamosa

The Alamosa girls team is in 13th place with 19 ½ points. Two of the Lady Mean Moose wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals.

Gizelle Meraz (115) won by a 20-2 technical fall over Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Christina Lopez in 3:01 in the first round. She then won by a 7-1 decision over West Grand’s Sage Wheatley in the quarterfinals.

Samantha Maestas (120) pinned Montezuma-Cortez’s Paislee Mestas in 1:56 in the first round. She then pinned Pueblo Central’s Isabella Mares in 45 seconds.

The remaining Alamosa wrestlers were defeated in the first round. Leah Pintor (100) was pinned by Basalt’s Emely Mejia-Garcia in 1:52, and Kennedy Hillis (110) was pinned by Fort Morgan’s Youvy Hinojos in 1:01.

Monte Vista

The Monte Vista girls have scored four points.

Torrina Herrera (115) pinned Olathe’s Neveah Cortez in 5:28 in the first round, and she was pinned by Skyview’s Arianna Alavardo in 4:51 in the quarterfinals.

The remaining Lady Pirates lost their first round matches. Kaliah Stucky (155) was pinned by Berthoud’s Abi Speer in 3:06, Malia Martinez-Castro (170) was pinned by Meeker’s Ruth LeBlanc in 3:12, and Mikaela Molina (190) was pinned by Fort Lupton’s Dahlila Tijerina in 2:29.

Antonito

All three of Antonito’s wrestlers lost in the first round. Alyssa Abeyta (105) was pinned by Canon City’s Piper Montoya in 50 seconds, Eliana Garcia (110) was pinned by North Fork’s Velma Bailey in 25 seconds, and Lauren Gallegos (125) was pinned by Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Lexie Amendt in 3:59.

Tournament continues

The state tournament had its semifinals and the first two rounds of consolation take place on Friday. The third round of consolation, plus the fifth and third place matches will take place Saturday afternoon.

The tournament concludes with the championship matches today beginning at 5 p.m.
