With warmer temperatures in recent weeks in the San Luis Valley, now is the time for residents to start removing attractants and practicing bear-aware habits to prevent conflicts as bears wake up early.

COSTILLA COUNTY – A wildland fire is burning in the area of Chama Canyon, east of San Luis. The fire, which was reported at about noon on Friday, March 20, was estimated at 35 acres and was active. As of 4:25 p.m., it had reportedly grown to 106 acres.

MONTE VISTA – A 27-year-old man was arrested in connection to a fatal stabbing on Tuesday night, March 10, at the Rio Grande Motel in Monte Vista, according to information provided by the Monte Vista Police Department. 

History Colorado’s Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center in the San Luis Valley is joining the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, gaining global recognition for its work “connecting past to present and memory to action.”
