SLV emergency managers receive awards

The annual Colorado Emergency Management Conference, hosted by the Colorado Emergency Management Association (CEMA) and the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), was held earlier this month with participation by all SLV emergency managers.

Continuing with a tradition each year, the SLV received several awards and honorable nominations.

Clint Leggett, Mineral County emergency manager, received the coveted Regional Emergency Manager of the Year award. Leggett was instrumental during the southern Colorado flooding that affected both Mineral and Rio Grande Counties. Clint is best described by Mineral County Sheriff Terry Wetherill as a “machine” that never stops or slows, never turns down hard work and is a professional through and through.

Rio Grande County Emergency Manager Brian Burrell received the statewide Inspirational Award for his cancer fight that began as the southern Colorado floods arrived. Burrell is a force to be reckoned with and was never completely out of pocket despite his fight and most challenging journey. Both Brian and his wife celebrated this special moment in Loveland in a way most of us don’t understand. Congratulations Brian and never stop fighting!

Augusto “Gus” Basterrechea, Chair of the SLV Agriculture Coalition, received the statewide Community Service Award. Anyone who knows Gus appreciates his service to all people, all cultures and the whole community. He’s a very humble man who shares genuine kindness and friendship with everyone he meets.

Last, a shout-out to Costilla County Deputy Administrator Christopher Rodriguez and Costilla County Emergency Manager Lucas Casias for honorable nominations from their peers. Rodriquez also facilitated the awards ceremony at the banquet.
