ALAMOSA — The days of this holiday season may be flying by, but the festivities, celebrations and community gatherings are keeping pace as this upcoming weekend has a number of events going on..
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19
Holiday craft pop-up in Monte Vista 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
On Friday, December 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., join LOR Community Officer Ivette Atencio for an all-ages holiday craft pop-up at the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce, 947 1st Street. They’ll be making glowing mason jar lights, enjoying seasonal snacks, and handing out special gifts to participating youth (while supplies last).
This event is a great way to get into the holiday spirit, connect with neighbors, and share ideas for future community projects.
Release of the Earth issue of HeartThrob! in Alamosa 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
From 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the evening of December 19, Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative invites members of the public to celebrate the release of the Earth issue of HeartThrob! This is the 4th and final issue of the inaugural year of HeartThrob, the first project curated, edited, and produced by Hysteria Heart Press. The zine will continue next year with new themes.
Come celebrate with the artists featured in the pages. The evening will begin with readings and short talks from the artists. Copies of the Earth issue will also be available as well as a glimpse of plans for the next year.
Narrow Gauge is located at the southwest corner of State Avenue and Main Street in downtown Alamosa.
Fundraiser (and fun) for the SLV Cancer Relief Fund 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday is also the evening for an event supporting the SLV Cancer Relief Fund. Hosted by and held at the Green Spot, 711 State Avenue, this event starts off with a visual feast as the plant store has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland where there will be food and various drinks available with additional items brought by some who attend.
In its fifth year, this event provides an opportunity to have a great time with friends while also supporting individuals and families who are fighting – or have fought – a battle with cancer.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20
North River Greenhouse and Landscaping Winter Market 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Alamosa
The following day, Saturday, December 20, North River Greenhouse and Landscaping is hosting their winter market from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Visit their garden center and “enjoy a stroll through the booths, taste your way through organic foods or find unique gifts for your loved ones. Come along,” they say, “for a fun day out with your family and discover what our local producers have to offer.” North River Greenhouse and Landscaping is located at 1155 7th Street in Alamosa.
SLV Makers Market 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Also on Saturday, there will be the SLV Makers Market in Center, at the Annex Building, 295 South Worth Street. This market is a chance for people to see the extraordinary variety of items made by artisans, craftspeople and others in the San Luis Valley.
They advertise “local gifts, gifts, family and fun” but that barely scrapes the surface of what can be found.
Annual Christmas Community Party 12;00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Mark your calendars! In a continuing tradition of breaking bread and celebrating the holidays with fellow members of the community, EVERYONE is invited to don their tackiest Christmas sweater and spend Saturday, Dec 20th at La Puente’s annual Community Christmas Party! There will be hot cocoa, sugar cookies, a lasagna lunch, caroling, and other activities from 12pm-3pm.
Of course, SANTA himself will be there to give out a FREE age-appropriate gift to EVERY guest! So come and invite your neighbors and friends! Sponsored by La Puente, this festive event will be held at 913 State Avenue in Alamosa.
Christmas Parade of Lights 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
That night, an event held year after year and remembered all year long will take place on Main Street in downtown Alamosa.
“It is a One-of-a-Kind Event in Alamosa!! Christmas Cheer can be seen on the smiling faces as laughter and fun fill Main Street! It is the Perfect way for Our Community to come together at Christmas! Come join us!” say the organizers.
“We will once again be sending all the New December Babies home in a Stocking Cap, Christmas Stocking and Candy Cane Socks- Reminding the Youngest Members of Our Community that ‘You are LOVED this Christmas!!’”
SUNDAY DECEMBER 21
Crow Party: Trade Your Trinkets 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The fun continues when Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative hosts another community event where people are invited, but this time it’s to a trinket exchange!
Bring a gently used trinket to trade with other corvid-minded individuals! Think things that sparkle, shine, or are just satisfying to the part of our brain that goes, “Oh, I like this!” No need to buy a new item, and please, no clothing items.
Jewelry, pins, stickers, crystals, tchotchkes, and other oddities are perfect for this gathering. If you don’t have anything and would still like to come, we’ll have a few extras on hand for you to choose as your offering! Water, tea, and coffee will be available.
Community Sing-Along with Don Richmond 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Finally, there is no more fitting way for the weekend to end than with one of the greatest gifts there is.
Music. Especially music performed and led by the amazing Don Richmond.
For more than two decades, the Sing-Along has been a community tradition that provides friends and families a free opportunity to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate, sing holiday music together, and visit with Santa Claus. Songbooks are provided so everyone can sing along, and attendees can even request their favorite holiday tunes.
Sponsored by Alamosa Live Music Association (ALMA), the only admission fee for attendees is a willingness to participate and have fun. However, during these difficult times, please join us in supporting our local food banks and bring your non-perishable food donations.
This festivity that has taken place in towns and cities for centuries will be held at Milagro’s Coffee House, located on the northeast corner of State Avenue and Main Street in downtown Alamosa.
The San Luis Valley just shines during the holiday season, so folks are encouraged to get out of the house, join in on the activities and just soak up some of the most abundant good cheer to be found.
