CREEDE - As one famous author once said, “Not all those who wander are lost,” here in Creede, most of them are out looking for rocks!
Hosted within the underground Mining Museum and Community Center located just north of Creede, the annual Creede Rock and Mineral Show is sure to sate the appetite of any rockhound from around the globe.
This annual show brings hundreds of people to the area to not only share their knowledge of all that glitters, but to wander amongst the many vendors set up in the caves below the mountain in the community center. Well over 40 vendors sign up for this event and there will be something for every rock and mineral enthusiast.
Creede has a long history wrapped around the mysterious world of geological wonders and with that comes the perfect venue for the annual show. Beginning Aug. 1 and running through Aug. 3, the community center will be the epitome of all things glittering and gold. From rare minerals that shimmer and shine to meteors, this will be a year packed with wonder. The show runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For those that would like help identifying rocks and minerals, there will be several professional geologists on hand to help identify specimens from all over the place. From jewelry to large cut geodes for home display, the show is packed with knowledgeable guests and more.
While in the area, guests are encouraged to visit the 17-mile Bachelor Loop which will take travelers through the historical mining district above Creede. Building, mining sites, slash piles and more showcase the ghosts of Creede past and capture what it was like to search for silver in the San Juans so long ago.
Those who do venture up into the historic mining district should make plans to visit one of Creede’s hidden treasures and go see Jack Morris at the Last Chance Mine. Mining tours take guests into the caverns of the Last Chance, and with the help of experienced tour guides, visitors will be astounded by what they find in the 133-year-old mine.
After a day of rocks and minerals, guests can go back to the community center for an evening talk about geology in the area, grab a seat at the Creede Repertory Theatre or just wander the downtown area enjoying the many shops and restaurants serving up live entertainment and delectable food.
No matter what, there is something for everyone during the weekend of Aug. 1-3. For more information or a full schedule of events, visit www.creede.com
