CONEJOS COUNTY — A statement from the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) was released on Thursday afternoon, stating that, following an extensive six-day search operation for two elk hunters - Andrew Porter and Ian Staska - last heard from a week before, two male bodies were discovered in the search area.
"On September 18 at approximately 11:00 am, the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office recovered 2 unidentified males two miles from the Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead.”
Although Thursday's statement does not mention it, a previous statement from the Conejos County PIO issued the day before had stated the vehicle belonging to the two hunters had been found in that same general area.
CCSO's statement does not provide any additional information about the bodies that had been discovered and, instead, focuses on the enormous effort and outpouring of support that went into the search.
"This search was made possible through the coordinated response of multiple resources including ground search & rescue teams, law enforcement teams, Forest Service crew, air support, canine units, horseback riders, and the over 170 personnel who assisted in the search. We extend our deepest gratitude to the New Mexico State Search & Rescue and Colorado State Search and Rescue.
"The commitment, coordination and professionalism of all those involved in the search are a testament to our efforts. This collaborative effort reflects the strength of our community and the unwavering dedication to every volunteer and agency involved. We are proud of the perseverance demonstrated throughout the search.
The statement concludes by saying, "At this time, the individuals remain unidentified. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available pending identification and notification of next-of-kin. Updates will be provided as they become available."
