South Fork sparkles for Third of July

SOUTH FORK - A huge crowd gathered just outside the South Fork Fire Rescue (SFFR) building mid-morning on July 3 as they waited in line for the annual SFFR Catfish Fry. A delicious odor drifted along the slight breeze while volunteers and SFFR members toiled inside, frying up fresh fish for the waiting crowd.

Hundreds of people came to enjoy a meal while supporting the local fire organization, kicking off this Third of July celebration in mouthwatering style. Vendors lined the parking area just behind the building offering homemade wares, fun trinkets, and beautifully crafted gifts. Auction items lined tables inside giving guests even more chances to support the organization.

As the morning wore on, guests enjoyed several activities throughout town from shopping to outdoor activities. There was something for everyone to enjoy on this holiday. It was not long before people started to gather along the Frontage Road, setting up chairs and claiming their spots for the annual parade.

South Fork, like many towns in the San Luis Valley, allow just about anyone to participate in the parade. Participants make every effort to impress and decorate with patriotic colors of red, white, and blue. ATVs, trucks, fire engines, bikes and more make their way down the road to the cheers of the crowd, all led by the Color Guard who march with the flags. Cheers rent the air as candy is tossed, water is sprayed, and Independence Day is honored in style.

As the evening drew near, crowds gathered once again at Rickel Arena for the annual Burris and Sons Rocking the Rio Rodeo kicked off just after 6 p.m. From bucking broncs to barrel racing, this annual event really set the stage for the end of the night.

Thanks to the many efforts of SFFR, the annual Firework show was one for the books. Just after dark the skies above the Rio Grande Club and Resort lit up with a colorful display of fireworks.

South Fork Mayor Tyler Schmidt took to social media the day after the event to thank everyone who helped make the Third of July in South Fork a rocking success.

“There are too many names to list of all the employees that made this week happen. Public works, police, administration, the visitor center and volunteers worked into the dark hours of the night trying to make this all happen for everyone, and they succeeded. Please find a Town of South Fork employee and shake their hand. They went well past ‘above and beyond’ in the last couple of weeks and need to be recognized for their superb effort.”

Next up for South Fork will be the annual Logger Days packed full of even more fun! For more information or a schedule of events, visit www.southfork.org.
