SAN LUIS VALLEY — According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, there is an approaching weekend storm system that will bring snow to the region.
Snow will increase across all the higher terrain starting Friday. The southwest and southern mountains are expected to receive the heaviest snow, and Winter Storm Watches are currently in effect for those areas. If planning to travel over the mountains, be prepared for winter driving conditions and continue to monitor the latest forecast for updates.
For those in the outdoors, Saguache County Search and Rescue advises, “These projected snow totals will likely end summer/fall climbing conditions throughout Saguache County in the Sangre de Cristo, Sawatch, San Juan and La Garita mountain ranges. Mountaineers should be prepared for winter alpine conditions. Poor adherence between early season and fresh snow layers will increase avalanche danger.
Air assets will likely be unavailable for rescue operations during this storm.
Backcountry travelers on the Continental Divide Trail, Colorado Trail and Tour Divide MTB Route should seek lower elevations.
