ALAMOSA – The season came to an end for the fourth-seeded Alamosa High School volleyball team Saturday at the Class 3A State Tournament as the Lady Mean Moose were defeated by seventh-seeded and defending state champion Resurrection Christian at the Denver Coliseum.
The teams opened the first set by exchanging side outs before the Lady Cougars went on a 7-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. After a brief Alamosa side outs, Resurrection Christian had a 6-2 run to increase its lead to 15-8.
The teams both had a 2-0 run before the Lady Mean Moose went on an 8-4 run to reduce their deficit to 21-18. However, the Lady Cougars scored four of the final five points to take a 25-19 win.
Alamosa took a 2-0 lead to begin the second set, but Resurrection Christian went on a 13-4 run to open a 13-6 advantage. The Lady Mean Moose had a 4-1 run to close within 14-10, however, the Lady Cougars scored three straight points for a 17-10 lead.
Alamosa answered with a 6-3 run to narrow the Resurrection Christian lead to 20-16. But once again, the Lady Cougars finished strong by scoring five of the final nine points for a 25-20 victory.
The Lady Mean Moose began the third set by taking a 5-1 lead. They increased their advantage to 13-6, but the Lady Cougars scored four consecutive points to close within 13-10.
After an Alamosa side out, Resurrection Christian scored five straight points to tie the score at 15-15. The teams then traded side outs before the Lady Cougars scored seven of the last nine points to win the set and match 25-21.
Morgan Ortega led Alamosa with 21 assists in her final match with the Lady Mean Moose. Aubrey Rothermich led in kills with nine, followed by Ortega with seven, Taybor Wiedeman with five, and Lily Heersink with four. Heersink and Wiedeman are also seniors this season.
Addie Rice had Alamosa’s only two service aces.
Alamosa finished the season with 22 wins and six losses.
Friday’s late results
In Friday’s final two matches, Centauri and Del Norte were both eliminated.
The 12th-seeded Lady Falcons were defeated by eighth-seeded Sterling in the Class 3A State Tournament. The Lady Tigers won in straight sets 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16.
Centauri finished the season with 12 wins and 17 losses.
The eighth-seeded Del Norte Lady Tigers were defeated by third-seeded Lyons in the Class 2A State Tournament.
The Lady Lions won the first set 25-16, but the Lady Tigers won the second 25-19. Lyons won the final two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-16.
Del Norte’s final record was 22 wins and four losses.
Sanford and Sargent were both eliminated on Friday.
