During September and October, eleven Mineral County EMTs participated in a 40-hour refresher class in order to hone their patient care skills and to accrue sufficient continuing education credits to qualify for their biennial National Registry recertification and their triennial Colorado recertification. The class consisted of a combination of lecture, demonstrations, practice, and ultimately demonstrating competence in a dozen specific skills including medical and trauma patient assessments, IV therapy, IV medication administration, ventilation by a bag-valve mask, non-rebreather mask, and supraglottic airway, cardiac arrest and CPR, joint and long bone immobilization, and bleeding control. Students then had to pass a comprehensive final exam in order to gain credit for completing the class. Don Dustin was the instructor.
