Numerous residents in the Crestone, Baca Grande area reported hearing the rescue helicopter on the evening of Nov. 17.

SAN LUIS VALLEY — Teams from Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue (AVSAR), South Fork Fire Rescue, Saguache SAR, and Chafee SAR participated in the rescue on Nov. 17-18 of a stranded hiker in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Numerous residents in the Crestone, Baca Grande area reported hearing the rescue helicopter on the evening of Nov. 17.
According to South Fork Fire Rescue, the hiker had improper gear, including poor footwear, was in very windy terrain, and encountered deep snow. The hiker became hypothermic and was reached by AVSAR and extracted with the assistance of Eagle Air Med helicopter.
