ALAMOSA — Everybody seems to know somebody who just happened to catch a performance by some unknown singer-songwriter somewhere that blew them away only to later see that singer-songwriter become famous. It’s the kind of experience a person remembers. And after listening to the music of Sam Robbins, it’s easy to imagine him being that well known one day. 

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The aspens are in full color at higher elevations in and around Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The lower cottonwood and aspen trees are just starting to turn to a golden yellow. 

ALAMOSA – Ambassador Ken Salazar will present on relations between the U.S. and Mexico at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Adams State University Leon Memorial Hall. The event is free and open to the public. 

WOLF CREEK PASS — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner Williams Construction will begin drainage improvements to the US Highway 160 Wolf Creek Pass tunnel starting Monday, Sept. 23. 

ALAMOSA — The Larry Holder Exercise and Cancer Survivorship Program at Adams State University (ASU) is deeply committed to the well-being of cancer survivors in the San Luis Valley. It offers those who have or are currently experiencing cancer the opportunity to participate in an individualized exercise program conducted in a group setting. 

ALAMOSA – “I live with the philosophy of gratitude. I learned that from my mom and dad. This amazing award is really an honor for them,” said Sandy Ortega ’74, the 2024 recipient of the Billy Adams Award. 

CREEDE – As the trees within the San Juan and La Garita Mountains change into their fall attire, the 16th Annual Cruisin’ the Canyon Car Show will be hitting Main Street in Creede on Saturday. For the past 16 years, this popular event has brought car enthusiasts from all over the U.S. to add a spark of the past to the brilliance of fall in this small mountain town. 

CONEJOS COUNTY — A collision between two cars on Wednesday afternoon led to a Conejos County deputy sustaining serious injuries and being transported to a local hospital. In the other vehicle, two young women from Alabama were injured, less seriously, and transported, as well. 

SAGUACHE COUNTY — Colorado is blessed with some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The local Sangre de Cristo Mountains constantly remind us of this gift that we experience and share with visitors from around the globe. 

ALAMOSA — A 10-month-old baby was found deceased on Friday afternoon, Sept. 13. The Alamosa Police Department is conducting an investigation to determine the infant’s cause of death. 

COLORADO — The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) has been monitoring hiking use on Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks (14er) using infrared trail counters since 2014. Hiking some or all of Colorado's 58 14,000-plus foot peaks is a passion for residents and visitors alike. The exhilarating pastime benefits hikers and our economy. 

ALAMOSA – In just two years since earning her B.A. in political science from Adams State, Courtney Hocking ’22 is making impressive progress toward her goal of working in international relations. She will receive the Adams State 2024 Exceptional New Alumna Award at the Homecoming Banquet on Sept. 27. 

ALAMOSA – Longtime San Luis Valley newspaper publisher Keith Cerny will be honored with a retirement party Friday, Sept. 20 from 4-6 p.m. on the patio of Knee Knockers restaurant at Cattails Golf Course.

ALAMOSA — After years of gathering data, planning, networking, pitching, applying for grants, and building a strong foundation of community support, a major milestone was celebrated Tuesday evening with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new early childhood learning center on the property of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV).  

ALAMOSA — The two candidates running to fill the congressional seat vacated by Rep. Lauren Boebert — Democratic nominee Adam Frisch and Republican nominee Jeff Hurd — will be on the same stage on Sept. 18, and voters can hear directly from the candidates themselves about their views on a number of topics.  

ALAMOSA — Alamosa resident Larry Chavez, 33, was in court on Tuesday morning, where a preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 30. In the preliminary, the presiding judge will determine if there is enough evidence to order Chavez to stand trial for allegedly killing Enrique Parra. 

ALAMOSA – Adams State University announced the institution continued to see an upward swing in undergraduate enrollment this fall, building on last year’s success. The University undergraduate enrollment is up nearly 5 percent from 2023.
