DEL NORTE- A procession of emergency vehicles performed an escort from the Alamosa County line to the Mineral County line for a 12-year old boy who has spent the last five months in the Denver Children’s Hospital fighting leukemia.
Jordan Medina Tuscan recently finished treatment for his third round of cancer and was returning home to Durango to spend his last days with family and friends. According to Rio Grande County Victim’s Advocate Courtney Arthur, Tuscan is the nephew of one of the county’s road deputies and they were asked to give him an escort through Rio Grande County. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to see this brave young man home,” said Arthur.
Monte Vista EMS, Monte Vista Police Department, Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Department, South Fork Police Department, South Fork EMS, Del Norte Police, Del Norte EMS, Del Norte Fire Department and Colorado State Patrol came out on Oct. 8 to clear a path for the procession to pass safely through the county and to cheer Tuscan on as he traveled home.
The treatment received by Tuscan was unsuccessful and according to sources, doctors gave him two weeks to live. Arthur explained that the family was given the choice to remain at Denver Children’s Hospital to continue treatment or to go home and make the best of what time they had remaining with Jordan.
“Our hearts were so full that day. At the end of the procession, Jordan got on the radio and thanked us for seeing him home. We all were so grateful for the opportunity,” said Arthur.
Emergency vehicles traveled the distance with full lights and sirens through the county before turning back at the county line. “We are asking everyone to continue prayers for the family and wish Jordan well,” said Arthur.
