Music festival, plays and bike race on horizon

By Lyndsie Ferrell
CREEDE— Creede is up and running in preparation for the Third Annual Headwaters Music Festival and has a wide variety of activities for the entire family to enjoy throughout the weekend of Aug. 25. Not only will the town be welcoming some great musical talent, they will also be hosting the annual Headwaters Play Festival at the Creede Repertory Theatre and Second Annual Headwaters Mountain Bike Race.
The weekend kicks off on Saturday, with the Headwaters Mountain Bike Race that takes racers along the historic Bachelor Loop Mining District located north of Creede. According to the race description, “The course covers 18.4 miles of terrain through Creede’s history. Bikers will see historic Sunnyside, Bachelor Townsite, Outlet, Midwest, Phoenix Park and Solomon mines. Racers will climb the loop, a gain of almost 1,900 feet in elevation, beginning at 8,850 feet and peaking at 10,717 feet above sea level. Enjoy breathtaking sites as you pedal through this challenging course.
Proceeds from the race will go to support the work of the Headwaters Alliance, who is working to find the right balance between the ecosystem, economy, people and recreation in the Upper Rio Grande Basin, so you can feel good about your registration fees. This year, the Headwaters Mountain Bike Race will be on the same day as the first day of the Headwaters Music Festival. Options are available to register both for the race and the music fest.”

The music fest starts off Saturday with Rally Round at 11:30 a.m. in the Creede Ball Park located south of town. The music festival will showcase bands like Bittersweet Highway, Maggie Rains, Thom Shepherd and many more. It is a family-oriented event that also offers unique dining and vendor booths to enjoy while music plays in the background. Guests are invited to set up chairs, blankets and even tents in the grass to enjoy the outdoor show. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.headwatersmusicfestival.com.
The week will also play host to CRT’s Seventh Annual Headwaters New Play Festival. The Headwaters New Play Festival is a week-long workshop where selected plays are developed with a team of professional theatre artists and receive public readings.
CRT explains the festival stating, “Headwaters is the source of new plays of the West. However, our definition of West is extremely broad, it may include plays set in the current, historic or mythic western United States; plays that reflect the diverse cultures and experiences of the West; plays that examine the American urban/rural divide and plays that completely re-imagine what ‘West’ means.”
Festival audiences get a front row seat into the adventurous process of bringing a play to life, untested material, instant feedback, engaging talk-backs and even see the original Young Audience Outreach Tour play before it hits the road.” CRT’s 52nd season featured the Headwaters World Premiere of General Store by Brian Watkins, a new dramatist resident playwright.
This year’s play selections include: Sanctuary, North by R.W. Schneider and Hazardous Materials by Beth Kander. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.creederep.org/headwaters.
