Creede School Hosts Family Science Night

Students perform a surface tension experiment at Family Science Night.

CREEDE - Creede School was filled with excitement, curiosity, and wonder during the Second Annual Family Science Night held on Nov. 20. Over 35 elementary school students and their families were given the opportunity to engage in a variety of experiments and demonstrations throughout the evening. This year’s theme was “A Night of Discovery, Exploration and Elasticity!”
Collin Vinchattle, interim superintendent for Creede Schools, was pleased with the support and turnout from students and parents. “It is exciting to see the number of families that came out and that amount of learning that occurred in a fun atmosphere!”
Students, along with their parents, performed experiments covering concepts which included surface tension, sound waves, polymers and energy transfer. Parents assisted their students in forming hypotheses, performing experiments and discussing experiment results. Each of the five experiment stations presented at this year’s Family Science Night included all supplies needed for each experiment. Also included were detailed procedure sheets describing the scientific concept being demonstrated and questions to be answered.
Snacks provided by Creede Schools included “Protons and Neutrons” (grapes) and “Double Helix, Jack & Cheddar” (cheese snacks). Highlights from the evening included a pollination exercise in which students were introduced to the concept of distribution of pollen by bees using Cheetos as pollen. The evening concluded with a liquid nitrogen demonstration which included frozen flowers, balloons, dragon’s breath, and hammering a nail into a piece of wood with a banana.
