CREEDE— The District 6 conference chase in the girl’s division of Class 1A is getting just as crazy and jumbled as the boy’s division— mainly because of the Lady Miners of Creede. They keep winning games they were maybe not supposed to and losing one here and there that they probably should have won.
The Ladies shook off a painful three point loss in a ragged effort at Crested Butte Friday to hand district leading and state top ten ranked Holy Trinity a 43-32 spanking in Creede Saturday afternoon. That win, coupled with a Moffat victory over Sierra Grande, another top ten ranked team Saturday night, left the Lady Miners one game back of those two teams. The Lady Panthers and the Holy Trinity now have two district losses, and Creede is at second place with three.
Holy Trinity had beaten Creede in Trinidad last month, but as assistant coach Kim Fairchild said, “we are not the same team we were earlier in the season.” Head coach Aaron Christensen agrees. “That’s right,” he said. “This team has come a long way.”
However, Christensen still sees room for improvement for the Ladies. He was not pleased with the 34-37 loss to Crested Butte Friday. Creede led for all but the last half of the fourth quarter, when a combination of Miner’s foul trouble and the Lady Titans pounding of the offensive boards did them in. “We let their physical play dominate us,” Christensen said. “You can’t go on the road and win without meeting that challenge. We kept giving them second and third—sometimes four—chances on the offensive boards. That just will not work.”
Saturday’s game at home was a different story. The Lady Miners jumped on Holy Trinity 11-4 in the first quarter, and unlike the Crested Butte game, they never let up. Creede completely took Holy Trinity out of their game and kept them at bay for all four quarters. Senior point guard Kelly Lamb, who had 14 points Friday at Crested Butte, had a monster game against Holy Trinity. She had 16 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Hillary Morris had 7 points and Tesha Brown, 6.
As did the boys, the Ladies were scheduled for a crucial game at home against Sierra Grande Wednesday. They will be at Centennial Friday as the tight race for the district crown continues. “It seems like right now, any of the girls teams can beat any other on any given night,” Christensen said. “It is getting interesting.”
