CREEDE— The Lady Miners will get a good look this weekend at how they have improved and where they stand in comparison to the beginning of the season. The Ladies are in second place in the district with two losses, one to Crested Butte and one to Holy Trinity, the two teams Creede will face Friday and Saturday, and the two teams that are tied for first place in District 6.
“Those are the two teams that have beat us this season, so I guess we will see how far we have come,” said coach Aaron Christensen. The Miners will travel to Crested Butte Friday and host Holy Trinity Saturday afternoon.
Last weekend, while the Lady Miners had their two games postponed, Holy Trinity stopped Crested Butte in Trinidad 45-43 to tighten up the district standings.
Creede opened up district play in December by hosting Crested Butte, falling 39-28. Christensen said his young team played Butte even up for three quarters before suffering from turnovers and poor execution in the final stanza. “It was much like that in the loss at Holy Trinity too,” Christensen said. “The fourth quarter cost us the game.”
But Christensen believes that the late January edition of this Lady Miners team is not the same as the one that took the court in December. They have won six games and showed steady improvement. “We are a much different team now,” he said. “Our defensive play is improved and that’s where our emphasis is, and we are better on the offensive end too.”
In their last few outings, the Lady Miners appeared to be a team gaining confidence and playing with more assurance. With eight games under their belt, their play has been less hesitant. They have been running their offense and making good decisions to finish plays.
“This is a big weekend for us,” Christensen said. “No doubt about that. We have an opportunity to step up.”
The Lady Miner game against Sierra Grande that was postponed Friday has been rescheduled for Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. The Aguilar game scrubbed Saturday has yet to be rescheduled.
